Historically, mental health always has been a neglected topic in India. It was never been much discussed topic until there was an increase in cases. People suffering from mental illness always faced stigma in the society. However, with the introduction of Mental Healthcare Act 2017, India acknowledges the crises deepening with mental health. It joined the universal picture to fight against the growing cases of mental illness in India. According to Dr. Vipul Tyagi, a reputed psychiatrist in Indipirapuram and offering mental illness treatment at Shree Narayan Hospital, "this is a great step towards the fight against mental illness in India. This will be really helpful to remote areas and cities where public mental care infrastructure isn't developed".
While looking at the future of mental health care industry in India, it is important to look at the scenario in both micro as well as macro level. At Macro Level- According to one report by China-India Mental Health Alliance in May 2016, it was revealed that there are six states in India having no mental care institute and are facing a huge mental care issues. Now with the introduction of this healthcare act, there will be a major change. Some of the characteristics of this bill include- decriminalization of suicide and the differentiation between mental illness and intellectual disability. Under Micro Level- In Indian society, there seems to be great division of awareness and acceptance. People belonging to higher economics strata are open to talk, compared to low income who struggle to open up about the illness. Dr. Vipul Tyagi witnesses many cases where people find hard to explain their problem to him. "Patients visiting me are majorly from low income strata group and have been suffering very serious mental illness issues and find hard to explain things. They face a huge awareness problem." However, as the times are changing there is a hope and potential of positive movement in India with increasing awareness among people. In fact, financial consulting companies are assisting hospitals to help in mental illness treatment and have identified as big revenue industry. Therefore, there is a great potential ahead. With professional doctors like Dr. Vipul Tyagi, you can be confident of getting result oriented mental illness treatment. The major challenge for this growing metal healthcare industry is to create awareness. The sector has to build infrastructure that can help in creating awareness. Once the awareness spreads, there could be a big change in macro and micro level.
